  • Karmann Ghia Coupé - Added 31 Novemeber 07

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was first built in around 1955 and continued until 1974. The Ghia is essentially a beetle-based sports car. Although built in fair numbers, the Karmann Ghia was never turned out in vast mass-produced quantities and so remains quite rare. The amazing thing is that they produced around 445 000 units going on sale. Of this around 80,000 Karmann Ghia cabriolets were completed. Here at The Car Insurance Warehouse we are among the millions of other motorist worldwide who concur that the Karmann Ghia is definitily one of the most beautiful car ever produced and although the value of the DB5 is far higher than the the Karmann Ghia they are both sticking to look at.

Because the British roads are salted frequently to prevent ice forming the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia has slowly deminished in numbers and many of the cars have slowly rotted away and many were therefore scrapped by the owners. More than any other factor, this has meant that UK market Karmann Ghias are a rare sight on our today. Of those that have actually survived, few are in show-worthy condition. Conversely the left-hand-drive Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is relatively easy to get hold of, there are plenty of Californian imports around.

According to one web site Collectors estimate that there are fewer than 20,000 Karmann Ghias still registered around the world. Of those, fewer than 2,500 are cabriolets (convertibles). With the declining number of unaltered Karmann Ghias still on the road, the value of these cars has and continues to increase. What a great car to own and pass on to your kids dont you think.

  • Porche 911 - Added 26 Novemeber 07

FOR Iconic design with excellent build quality, a legendary sound and supercar performance AGAINST Harsh ride and noise. Handling characteristics a challenge for the uninitiated Ease of ownership

    The right car for you?

Pre-impact bumper cars (up to 1973) are fast becoming the collectors’ choice, with the 2.4S the most desirable of the mainstream models. They offer the purest 911 driving experience but are less suited to winter use than later cars (the SC 3-litre and Carrera 3.2), which have better heating and more comfortable interiors. The later Getrag G50 gearbox (from 1986-on) has an easier gear change. Leak-prone Targas are the least desirable (with values about ten per cent less) while Cabriolets (only available from 1983-on) command ten per cent more.

  • Austin-Healey Sprite - Added 15 Novemeber 07

The Austin-Healey Sprite, was to be somewhat of a revolution for that era of car manufacture. Instead of having a separate chassis, as had been the case since the beginning of car design, this one was to be of a monocoque construction where the body was to perform the role of the chassis as an all-in-one unit. With this design the rigidity of the car is achieved by building the body in welded box-sections consisting of front and rear bulkheads, joined by hollow sill sections and body stiffeners, all mounted onto a floor pan. Extra rigidity came from the central transmission tunnel and in many places the body was designed with flat panels together with simply formed sections so as to keep construction costs down to a minimum. The bonnet and front wings were hinged at the bulkhead and lifted as one piece, not only keeping assembly costs low, but providing wonderful access to the engine. The first prototype Sprite incorporated external hinges, to reduce costs, but had expensive pop up headlamps. By the time prototype number two was built all this had changed with the headlamps becoming fixed in individual pods on the bonnet, providing the ‘frogeye’ appearance, and for which the car got its unofficial name of Frog-Eyed Sprite.

  • Aston Martin sold to UK-led group - Added 31 October 07

Luxury car firm Aston Martin is heading back into British hands after being sold by Ford in a £479m ($924m) deal.

Ford is selling off the marque - made famous by James Bond - for $439m as it tackles its own financial woes, but the group is holding onto a £40m stake.

Ford bought a 75% stake in Aston Martin in 1987, and bought the rest later.

Aston Martin will remain at its purpose-built factory in Gaydon in Warwickshire, which employs 1,800 people.

  • The New Mini Clubman - Added 31 October 07

The new Mini Clubman station wagon is driving into a design row in the world's right-hand-drive markets.

The carry-all, built on a platform 24cm longer than the standard Mini hatchback, comes with a narrow reverse-opening rear passenger door on the right-hand side to let rear-seat passengers get in and out without disturbing the driver. That's in left-hand-drive markets, where the car can cosy up to the kerb for passenger safety. But in right-hand-drive New Zealand, the driver will have to get out to let passengers out - because the Clubman is being built in one bodyshell style only.

A report this week said the right-hand-drive Clubman would have the reverse-opening door on the left so that front and rear passengers in New Zealand, Australia, Britain, Japan and so on wouldn't have to get out into traffic.

But Mini parent BMW has confirmed that the rear door will be on the car's right-hand side in all markets.

  • Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo S - Added 31 October 07

The Volkswagen New Beetle Turbo S is a terrible car for hauling sheets of plywood back from Home Depot or taking a family of five and their gear on a cross-country camping trip. Of course the same could be said of a Mazda Miata, Porsche Boxster, Corvette or dozens of other cars that have a high fun quotient and little practicality. The Turbo S, in contrast, is high on fun but also has its practical attributes.
The best feature of the Turbo S: its 180-horsepower four-cylinder engine. This silky power plant, which gets a boost of 10.5 pounds per square inch from an intercooled turbocharger, is shoehorned into the Beetle's front end and is attached to an equally righteous six-speed manual transmission that has final drives in both fifth and sixth gears. This combination propels the Turbo S to 60 mph in 7.4 seconds and to a top speed (computer-controlled) of 130 mph.
