Fuel cell Cars - Hybrid Vehicles - LPG and Green motoring.
The Car Insurance Warehouse believe that if you are able to do your
bit for the environment then you should. Here at the car insurance warehouse
we no longer drive petrol cars. That's right, we that is my wife and
I have exchanged our petrol guzzling 2.0 petrol Vauxhall Astra for a
1.9 Fiat Stilo JTD. If you are wondering how much of change that is
then this is how it works. The petrol 2.0 had 120 odd bhp and the higher
the BHP the more fuel your motor will need to use, petrol motors are
also less fuel efficient than their diesel counterparts which is not
a statement that I believed I would be saying 5 years ago. Petrol cars
simply can not get the same distance out of a liter of petrol as a diesel
can out of the same amount of diesel. That's means that even although
the government and petrol companies have taken full advantage of the
trend for UK motorists to sell the petrol cars and move to the more
economical diesel versions by hiking the prices of diesel at the petrol
pumps. Appalling that they would encourage and promote more fuel efficiency
and then penalise you immediately for doing so isn't it. The truth is
that they only care about their profits and you must look after yourself
and the environment because you choose to, not because they say so.
Diesel cars are not as cost efficient to drive as their gas powered
or LPG counterparts, but they are becoming more common to see. Gas powered
or LPG vehicles are in our opinion still the cheapest to run over a
long period of time and anyone who pays for the conversion to gas should
see a return on their investment after a few years. It does make perfect
sense to do if you have around £1500 to spare, especially if you are
a farmer who relies heavily on the cost of running machinery and equipment,
likewise if your drive a big Land Rover Discovery in the city then you
would be making a small contribution to your fellow city dwellers by
helping clean up our air and at the same time you will qualify for one
of Ken Livingstons' tax breaks too.
A similarly little know fact about diesel cars is that they are low
on emissions compared to petrol cars. That means that you get to save
a little money on your car tax when you buy a diesel motor. Strange
though that when you look at your diesel cars V5 or registration papers
from the DVLA you will see that it is classed as a heavy oil vehicle.
That actually refers to the that that diesel is a less refined product
than petrol, which makes it cheaper to produce!
Another interesting thing about diesel cars is that they do not have
spark plugs! Yes, that's what I said, no spark plugs. Diesel motors,
that includes tractors and trucks have Glow Plugs in place of spark
plugs. These perform the same function essentially, but last longer
than spark plugs to and actually cost less in most cases too.
In short, the diesel motor of old is history, more and more vehicles
are turning to diesel power units and this is great to see. The technology
in a diesels engine used to be considered only good enough for farm
equipment and generators and that was a pretty accurate assumption in
our books anyway. Today with the Toyota Preus and Honda Hybrid that
is no longer true. In fact its not necessary to only look at the hybrids
fro the latest technological advances in motoring, I personally think
it was thanks to the Honda Corporation that people now have a completely
different dispensation towards the diesel engine.
The advent of the hybrid engine. the Hybrid engine runs off both the
petrol or diesel driven engine and a combination of the cars engine
and either a battery / fuel cell driven electric motor. The electric
motors job is to assist the the cars engine during times of acceleration
during pull off and normally cuts out at around 30 or 40 miles per hour.
This electric motor works in synergy with the petrol driven engine,
hense the name for the Toyota Prius! The battery in these cars is charged
while you drive and unlike the original battery only vehicles which
you need to plug in to a power supply at night, this battery is recharging
when ever it is ideal. There is a new battery powered car which has
recently been developed and although it too needs to be recharged will
complete a range of some 100 miles and hit a top speed of around 65
mph. Very impressive we think. There is a hybrid motorbike too, have
a look at this.. its the Acabion
GTBO. Think that's great, well the ingenuitive engine boffin's have
gone one step further.. The worlds first car to run on Hydrogen Fuel
Cell Car has now been revealed. The Honda FCX is the worlds first car
to produce zero pollutants while running. The car will travel an estimated
270 miles at speeds of up to 100mph and will produce only water vapour
from its exhaust. It is expected to cost £50,000 and will be available
initially only in America and Japan. Toyota are looking to introduce
a more powerful and much more efficient Preius, and BMW also have a
hydrogen-powered 7-series car apparently, although they were not for
sale and it is speculated to currently use a combustion engine rather
than a fuel cell. Mazda revealed its Premacy RE hydrogen hybrid at the
Tokyo show late last year.
